Joomla16RC1There's good news on the Joomla 1.6 front! Tonight, the Joomla! Project officially released its RC1 version.  Fifteen beta releases later, Release Candidate #1 is now live, and available for download on Joomla.org. Give it a spin here!

That said, those in the know in the developer community are still recommending you treat this release with a fair dose of caution, almost like this is a "beta 16" version. At least one developer mentioned to me that there are some rather substantive, pesky bugs that remain in the stew.

That said, for now, let's all CELEBRATE the release! Proceed cautiously, as if some orange cones still line the roadway...hell, we're used to that. You may not want to use this RC on a live site. A big THANK YOU goes out to all those who contributed to the release of 1.6RC1! Three CHEERS!!!

The biggest issue for me is the availability of extensions. We'll see how quickly they roll out.

Although I agree that upgrading won't be practical in the immediate future, I'm already selling 2011 projects which tie 1.6 upgrades to new site features (especially ACL).

As for development, I'm throwing all of my attention at 1.6, including an update of my master template framework.

I think Andy miller said it best on his blog.
"Don't rush to jump on the Joomla 1.6 bandwagon
Unless you have a dire need for one of the new Joomla 1.6 features, you will be better of sticking with Joomla 1.5 for the next 6-12 months."

I have lived through the original 1.0 fork and the 1.5 initial release. My strong advice it to not even consider building live sites with Joomla 1.6 until around 1.6.4 or 1.6.5 and it gets stabilized and security has been tested.
Just because an open source software is released as "stable" it doesn't mean that there still isn't unforeseen major bugs or security patches to tak place. Would you want to be the first live 1.6 site that has known problems? I know I won't be.
Just some food for thought.

From my understanding, one of the biggest differences between Joomla 1.6 betas and Joomla 1.6 RC1 is that there is an upgrade path from the RCs, whereas upgrading from the betas requires more manual intervention (e.g. database changes).

About time I remember Joomla Chicago doing a preview of alpha 1 over a year ago. That said, congrats to the Joomla team! Joomla 1.6 is such a huge step for our CMS, it will be exciting what the community can create with it.

Yahoo!!! This is a excellent news, especially if they deliver the final 1.6 on January, 10 2011.
